Olympic Peninsula Workshop 2024 -SOLD OUT-

April 30 - May 3

| $1,900

Event Navigation

Journey deep into Olympic National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and photograph driftwood-covered coastlines, waterfalls, craggy, snowcapped peaks, and pristine evergreen forests! This is a wonderland where the scent of saltwater and pine hang in the air and the horizon sometimes seems to make the entire world appear to be shades of blue and green.

We will focus on the art of photographing complex rain-forests, cascading waterfalls, sea stacks and long exposures along with various flora and fauna. Spring is one of the most beautiful and lush times to capture this gorgeous part of the country.

This workshop is much more than a photo tour. Sure, we’ll visit some exciting locations, but, more importantly, we take a deeper dive into the art of photography. This workshop will focus on artistry and creativity in both the camera and in the digital darkroom. We’ll explore more advanced techniques in both capture and post processing for creating final artwork. Whatever your approach, color or black & white, whatever your style and whatever your subject matter, this workshop can open new doors into the art of photography.

Our field and classroom sessions will cover the complete photographic workflow from initial vision, effective image exposure, to the finished digitally post-processed image. We’ll focus on the art of photography including the art of seeing, better understanding of light, and using the elements of composition and post processing to realize your vision.

Itinerary

Shooting schedules have the ability to be altered to effectively cater to the photographic desires of the group, as well as to adapt to changeable weather conditions.

Day 1:
  • Meet and greet at 8pm. Everyone can introduce themselves, and Art will give a brief description of the proposed itinerary.
  • Brief presentation centered around the photo opportunities to be had in this region. We will get to know one another and discuss gear and the opportunities for our time together.
Day 2:
  • Field session: Lake Crescent, Sol Duc Rainforest

-There’s no shortage of waterfalls in the Olympic National Parks. Waterfalls are a photographers delight, but when you tuck those waterfalls into a rainforest, magic happens. This time of year it is lush and green so the mossy covered rocks will look beautiful as the water cascades around them.

  • Group no host dinner
  • Download images from the day of shooting
Day 3:
  • First Field Location: Hoh Rainforest

-There may be nothing more magical than photographing a rainforest. However capturing any forest can be a challenge to identify patterns, shapes and create order out of what can appear to be chaos. We’re going to work with you side by side to ensure that you create compositions that are ascetically pleasing.

  • Early group dinner
  • Sunset Field Location: Railto Beach or Second Beach

Sunset on the coast can be a magical experience. We will have a low tide right before sunset, so there will be great opportunities to find engaging foreground elements for our sunset compositions. As the tide starts to roll back in the low light of sunset, and possibly an ND filter, will allow you to slow down your shutter for an ethereal impact as well.

Day 4:
    • Lecture and critique. Learn from each others images while they are projected for the group. Art will adjust them in Adobe Lightroom and provide instruction.
    • Workshop will conclude by 12pm
