Among Moss and Mist: Olympic Peninsula Small-Group Photography Retreat – ONLY ONE SPOT LEFT!

May 18 - May 22

| $3450

Event Navigation

Join Art Wolfe and Libby Pfeiffer for an immersive four-day photography retreat in the lush, awakening landscapes of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. Based in Port Angeles, this small-group experience is designed to offer a more intimate and focused environment, limited to just 6 participants.

We will focus on the art of photographing complex rain-forests, cascading waterfalls, sea stacks and long exposures along with various flora and fauna. Spring is one of the most beautiful and lush times to capture this gorgeous part of the country.

This photography retreat is much more than a typical workshop. Sure, we’ll visit some exciting locations, but more importantly, we take a deeper dive into the art of photography. This retreat will focus on artistry and creativity in both the camera and in the digital darkroom. We’ll explore more advanced techniques in both capture and post processing for creating final artwork.

With personalized instruction from Art and Libby, participants will dive deep into creative seeing, composition, and developing their photographic voice. Whether you’re capturing the texture of ancient bark, the dance of light across mossy stones, or the motion of rushing water, this retreat invites you to slow down and truly see.

At its core, this retreat is a deeply immersive photographic experience, one that unfolds in the field, in the moment, and in the company of a small group of like-minded creatives. Days are spent chasing light and refining your vision, while evenings bring everyone together over wonderful meals, where stories are shared, connections are formed, and lasting friendships take root. It’s a rare blend of creative growth and genuine camaraderie, an experience that not only elevates your photography, but quietly transforms the way you see the world.

Itinerary

Shooting schedules have the ability to be altered to effectively cater to the photographic desires of the group, as well as to adapt to changeable weather conditions.

Day 1:
  • Meet and greet at 6pm at the Olympic Lodge. Everyone can introduce themselves, and Art will give a brief description of the proposed itinerary.
  • Group no host dinner at The Kokopelli Grill
Day 2:
  • This day will begin with an inspirational lecture that Art has put together specifically for this photo retreat.
  • The group will stop by the local grocery store so that everyone can pick up a lunch for the day in the field.
  • Afternoon Field Session at Sol Duc Rainforest
  • On the way back, we may stop for photographic opportunities. Possible locations: Reflections in ponds, Lake Crescent, etc.
  • Drive back to Port Angeles and clean up before dinner (approx. 1-hr drive). This would be a good opportunity to download your images from the day’s shoot.
  • Optional no host dinner for those who may want to dine with Art and staff.
    Downrigger’s Waterfront Restaurant
    115 E Railroad Avenue
    Port Angeles, WA 98362
  • Download images from the day of shooting
Day 3:
  • Sunrise Photo Session: Hurricane Ridge (weather permitting)
  • Morning Critique. Each participant will provide three images from Day 2’s shoot. Art will adjust photos in Adobe Lightroom and provide instruction. Please note, this is not an intimidating process, but often one of the most constructive and informative segments of the workshop. Learn from each other’s images while they are projected for the group. This will give you the chance to build on successes and by example of other participants’ work, expand your creative eye to seeing things in a slightly different way.
  • Lunch Break at Lake Crescent Lodge.
  • Field Session: Marymere Falls.
  • Afternoon Field Session: Second Beach (potentially stay through sunset)
Day 4:
  • This day will be spent entirely in the field. So the group will stop by a grocery store on the way out of town to pick up lunch to be eaten in the field together.
  • First Field Session: Hoh Rainforest
  • Early Group dinner in Forks:
    Pacific Pizza
    870 S. Forks Ave.
    Forks, WA 98331
  • Rialto Beach or Second Beach for sunset (approx. 1.25-hr drive from Hoh).
Day 5:
  • Lecture and critique. Learn from each others images while they are projected for the group. Art will adjust them in Adobe Lightroom and provide instruction.
  • Workshop will conclude by 12pm

I love photographing in the Olympic Peninsula and it seems like every time I am leaving I am wishing for more time to photograph in this beautiful region.  So I have decided to provide an exclusive photography retreat which will not only grant me additional time in the field to teach, but also a more extended period of time to get to know each of the participants.  I am really looking forward to the opportunity to photograph with a small group in one of my favorite places to visit.
