Event Navigation

Step beyond representation and into a more expressive way of seeing in the quiet charm of historic Port Townsend, located on the northeastern tip of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. This exclusive four-day retreat invites just eight participants to explore the art of abstraction alongside Art Wolfe, whose mastery of composition and design has inspired photographers around the world. Together, you’ll wander through a rich tapestry of textures, patterns, and subtle details, transforming the ordinary into striking, personal interpretations that challenge perception and ignite creativity.

Itinerary

Shooting schedules have the ability to be altered to effectively cater to the photographic desires of the group, as well as to adapt to changeable weather conditions.

Day 1 — Arrival & Welcome Gathering

Arrive in Port Townsend and settle into your accommodations before our evening meet-and-greet. This relaxed gathering offers a chance to connect with fellow participants and instructors, set expectations for the days ahead, and ease into the creative atmosphere.

Dinner to follow at one of Port Townsend’s excellent local restaurants.

Day 2

The day begins at a comfortable hour with an engaging and thought-provoking lecture from Art Wolfe, introducing key concepts in abstract photography and training the eye to see beyond the literal.

Following the lecture, we head into the field for our first extended shooting session, exploring the rich visual textures and details that make this region so compelling. The afternoon offers continued time to photograph, experiment, and receive individualized guidance.

We’ll gather again in the evening for a shared meal and conversation.

Day 3

The morning begins with our first critique session, where images from the previous day are reviewed in depth. This collaborative environment encourages insight, discussion, and new ways of seeing.

In the afternoon, we return to the field with fresh perspective, refining compositions, exploring new subjects, and pushing creative boundaries. With such a small group, you’ll benefit from consistent one-on-one feedback throughout the day.

Dinner together in the evening.

Day 4 — Final Critique & Departure

Our final morning includes a concluding critique session, offering thoughtful feedback and helping you synthesize what you’ve learned over the course of the retreat.

The workshop wraps up by late morning, leaving you with a renewed creative vision, stronger portfolio, and a deeper appreciation for the art of abstraction.
